A Brief Overview of Gourmet Coffee

Gourmet describes the more expensive grade, cut, or quality of many meals and beverages that we consume.

Since they can afford the higher prices that frequently accompany many of these more opulent food and beverage alternatives, gourmet meals and beverages have long been linked with the wealthy and famous.

Why We're Healthier than the Coffee You're Currently Drinking

The good news is that we only buy quality Arabica beans that are single-origin, organic, and pure from high-elevation farms in Central America.

How Regular Coffee is Made

Since you're already drinking coffee regularly, we thought we'd give you a high level overview on how coffee is made.

Coffee beans, which are found in the berries that form and mature on a variety of tiny evergreen bush plant species known as the Coffea plant, are used to make regular coffee.

Coffee berries are collected once they are fully ripe and are then processed, which involves drying. After the coffee berries are prepared and dried, what is left are the coffee beans. The beans are then roasted to different degrees, which changes both their physical characteristics and the flavors they generate.

Finally, the coffee beans are ground down into a fine consistency that is commonly known as coffee grounds, and packaged and shipped to destinations around the world where consumers can buy and brew coffee grounds to make coffee in commercial, hospitality, institutional, and residential settings.

Some people prefer to grind their own coffee beans before brewing them for coffee. Packaged coffee beans that have not been ground can be purchased in stores and ground using the grinding mills that are made available in most of the stores selling them, but also with grinding machines in the home.

What does this have to do with red wine?

You've probably read or heard something about how resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, has positive health effects. The benefits of this overhyped substance have been extolled, including assistance for heart health and weight loss. But is the buzz surrounding resveratrol in wine actually justified?

Join us as we discuss what resveratrol is, the potential health benefits it provides, how much resveratrol is normally present in wine, and whether or not drinking wine may actually be beneficial to your overall health.

How Does Resveratrol Work?

A naturally occurring polyphenol or nutrient-rich molecule, called resveratrol can be found in some plant-based meals. Free radicals are potentially dangerous chemicals that can damage cells and cause oxidative stress, which is connected to aging and a number of diseases.

Polyphenols are rich in antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory qualities to help protect cells from damage by free radicals.

Grapes, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cranberries, plums, apples, dark chocolate, tea, and even peanuts are some of the most popular dietary sources of polyphenols, as are the beverages created from these foods, such as grape juice and wine.

While some foods and beverages naturally contain resveratrol, it is also sold as supplements, frequently in the form of an extract from the Japanese knotweed plant (scientific name Polygonum cuspidatum). Trans-resveratrol, the active component of the molecule that is most beneficial to the body, is abundant in this plant (meaning it has better bioavailability).

But, what is resveratrol?

Our miracle ingredient resveratrol, first discovered in the 1940s, gained notoriety in 1992 when research revealed that red wine had heart-healthy properties.

Resveratrol is unquestionably a potent antioxidant, but whether consuming red wine can actually improve your health is still up for debate.

The majority of study has been conducted on animals or in test tubes, and the majority of studies conducted on people so far have concentrated on resveratrol supplements that provide larger levels of the compound than what is found in food or wine. (We'll talk more about this in the part after this; suffice it to say that it will blow your mind.)

In order to provide more conclusive information on the positive effects of resveratrol, longer-term human clinical trials are required. But in the interim, here are some encouraging initial findings that are supported by science:

Free radical damage can result in inflammation, brain degeneration, and disease and is brought on by pollution, sunshine, and aging. Resveratrol, therefore, has an incredible number of potential advantages. They consist of:

  • brings down LDL "bad" cholesterol
  • raises the "good" cholesterol HDL
  • reduces the risk of blood clots
  • brings down blood pressure
  • supports blood vessels
  • controls insulin levels and protects against cognitive aging
  • joint pain is reduced
  • slows down cellular aging
  • increases immunity
  • enhances cardiovascular performance

It's good to know that although resveratrol is generally viewed as safe, taking high dosages of resveratrol supplements can have rare negative effects, especially for people who use blood thinners like warfarin or have other medical problems and risk factors.

Before taking any dietary supplements, as always, seek medical counsel from your doctor or other healthcare providers to go over what's best for you.

How a NH Professor Changed the World

The Only Coffee Infused with Resveratrol

2015 saw the start of the Vera Roasting tale at a routine annual physical.

Glen Miller, Ph.D., a professor of organic chemistry at the University of New Hampshire, discovered that his blood sugar levels had increased, much like those of millions of Americans.

Vera Roasting Co. is a pioneer in the coffee industry for premium, heart-healthy coffee.

82% of American adults drink coffee, and they spend an average of $21 per week on their favorite blends.

Unlike tea, coffee has not, until now, placed a priority on innovation in health and wellbeing.

Glen Miller, Ph.D. questioned how Americans could consume more resveratrol. A strong antioxidant found in red grape skins, without drinking more red wine.

Thus, began his journey. While in the shower one morning, it dawned on him...
