At Vera Coffee Co., all of our coffee is infused with resveratrol. Often, the first question we are asked (other than how do you say that?) is "What is resveratrol?"
Resveratrol (pronounced rez-VERA-trawl) is the healthy nutrient that is commonly associated with red wine. This polyphenol is found naturally in the skins of red grapes along with other plants and helps protect them from the harsh environments in which they grow. Resveratrol entered the popular consciousness over thirty years ago, after the first “French Paradox” study was completed. This paradox allows the French population to consume a diet high in saturated fat while maintaining a relatively healthy cardiovascular system because of regular resveratrol consumption in red wine.
Resveratrol studies have continued over the last thirty years finding positive links to not only cardiovascular health, but also can play a role in healthy aging through bone health, blood glucose control, healthy cognitive function, skin youthfulness and oral health (See a list of studies here.) Resveratrol works as an antioxidant at the cellular level to help prevent inflammation and support healthy aging. Much like resveratrol works in plants to prevent environmental damage from pollution, pesticides, and insects, resveratrol protects your cells from adverse environmental effects.
So why not just take a resveratrol supplement? Resveratrol supplements are expensive and wasteful. Resveratrol is not water soluble and not bio-available in pill form, meaning that most of it is never absorbed. It simply passes through your system without benefiting you. Resveratrol in red wine is bio-available because of the alcohol which solubilizes it, and other natural compounds. Where does your resveratrol come from?
At Vera Coffee Co., we source our resveratrol from Evolva- an international company dedicated to providing consistently pure and safe resveratrol. Their resveratrol is fermented from yeast providing a >98% pure trans-resveratrol that is consistent batch to batch and free from environmental pollutants. Many of the commercially available supplements use resveratrol sourced from Japanese knotweed grown in China, which has the risk of environmental contamination from heavy metals and pollutants.
