What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol that is found in plants including grapes, peanuts, and blueberries. It acts as an antioxidant, protecting plants from free radicals caused by extreme weather, pollution, and predators. Resveratrol is best known because of studies connecting the regular consumption of red wine with improved heart health. If you've heard that red wine is good for your heart, it is because of the resveratrol that is present. In studies going back over thirty years, researchers have found a positive connection between red wine consumption and cardiovascular health.

Hear more about resveratrol and Vera's patented process from our founder, Dr. Glen Miller:

The French Paradox

The French Paradox is a term coined in the late 1980's to describe scientific research that found that although French people were consuming high-fat diets, they had a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease. Some scientists hypothesized that the difference was because of the moderate, but daily consumption of red wine that is prevalent throughout France. Ongoing decades of research have found resveratrol is not only linked to cardiovascular health, but can also provide anti-aging benefits and supports brain and bone health.

What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are molecules that fight off free radicals at the cellular level. Antioxidants share electrons with unstable free radicals to prevent cell damage. In plants, resveratrol works to prevent environmental damage from pollution, pesticides, and insects. It functions similarly in humans to protect your cells from adverse environmental effects. Learn more about how antioxidants work from the Harvard Medical School blog.

We infuse all of our coffees with resveratrol because antioxidants should be consumed everyday to deliver the most impact. If most coffee lovers can't imagine going without their daily cup of coffee and most consume a few cups every single day. By adding resveratrol to your daily cup of joe, you are able to get the benefits of one of the world's most powerful antioxidants into your diet without taking supplements or drinking more red wine. Vera's Patented Infusion Process

So, how does the resveratrol get into our coffee? Vera Coffee Co. was founded by an organic chemist with 25+ years of experience studying organic compounds. Vera coffee was engineered to deliver resveratrol in a form that our bodies can rapidly assimilate, much like red wine does. Our process is proprietary so we can't explain it in great detail, but basically it works like this:

The infusion takes place after roasting so that the resveratrol is not destroyed by the extreme heat of coffee roasting. Resveratrol is a robust compound and is not destroyed during the coffee brewing process which happens at a much lower temperature.

Resveratrol Sourcing & Testing

At Vera Coffee Co., we source our resveratrol from Evolva- an international company dedicated to providing consistently pure and safe resveratrol. Their resveratrol is fermented from yeast providing a >98% pure trans-resveratrol that is consistent batch-to-batch and free from environmental pollutants. Many of the commercially available supplements use resveratrol sourced from Japanese knotweed grown in China, which has the risk of environmental contamination from heavy metals and pollutants. We are committed to using pure, safe, and reliable resveratrol in our all coffees.

Supplements and Solubility

If resveratrol is good for you, why not just take a resveratrol supplement? Resveratrol supplements are expensive and wasteful. Resveratrol is not water soluble and not bio-available in pill form, meaning that most of it is never absorbed. It simply passes through your system without benefiting you. The resveratrol present in red wine is bio-available because of the alcohol which solubilizes it. Vera Coffee Co. was founded by an organic chemist with 25+ years of experience studying organic compounds. Vera coffee delivers resveratrol in a form that our bodies can rapidly assimilate, much like red wine does.

Collection of Resveratrol Research

Research on resveratrol has been continuing since the 1980s. In addition to continuing studies on cardiovascular health, resveratrol has also been studied in conjunction with brain health, gut health, mental health, and anti-aging. We have a selected list of studies here and more recent research can be found on Evolva's website.
